About Knots Counseling

Knots Counseling was created as a space for thoughtful, depth-oriented psychotherapy and meaningful professional support. The practice is grounded in the belief that lasting change does not come from rigid techniques or one-size-fits-all models, but from careful attention to each person’s inner world, relationships, and lived experience.

At its core, this is a relational practice. The work is shaped by attunement, curiosity, and genuine connection. Rather than reducing complex experiences to symptoms alone, therapy here makes room for nuance — for cultural context, family history, identity, ambition, vulnerability, and the often-unspoken patterns that quietly shape how life is lived.

Knots Counseling offers individual and couples therapy, as well as clinical supervision, consultation, and mentorship for clinicians at different stages of their professional development. Whether the focus is personal healing or clinical growth, the underlying approach remains the same: thoughtful, engaged, and grounded in real clinical experience.

Knots Counseling is led by Fem Erkaya, LMHC, a licensed mental health counselor and a psychotherapist providing therapy in both English and Turkish to adults and couples. The practice integrates psychodynamic theory with contemporary clinical experience, maintaining a balance between depth and direction.

The Philosophy Behind the Name

The name Knots reflects the understanding that much of emotional life can feel tangled — patterns that repeat, conflicts that persist, reactions that seem disproportionate yet deeply familiar. These knots often form over time, shaped by early relationships, cultural expectations, loss, trauma, ambition, and love.

The therapeutic process is not about cutting through complexity. It is about patiently untangling it. With time and reflection, what once felt confusing or overwhelming can begin to make sense. Patterns become clearer. Choices become more intentional. Relationships become more authentic.

This practice honors that process.
